Direct variation
"y varies directly as x" means for a constant k. Their ratio y/x is fixed.
Inverse variation
"y varies inversely as x" means so the product is fixed.
The two-step method
- Use the given pair to find k.
- Use k with the new value to find the unknown.
Recognising which is which
- "doubles when the other doubles" direct (ratio constant).
- "halves when the other doubles" inverse (product constant).
This is the algebraic twin of the EQN-02 proportion lesson — same idea, with an explicit k.
