Plugging in numbers
When the quantities contain a variable, test smart values and watch what happens to the relationship.
Test the special numbers that change behaviour:
- 0, 1, a negative number, and a fraction between 0 and 1.
If two different test values give two different relationships, the answer is D.
Why fractions and negatives matter
- A fraction between 0 and 1 gets smaller when squared
- A negative number squared becomes positive.
- Multiplying by a number between 0 and 1 shrinks a value.
These break the "bigger exponent means bigger value" intuition — exactly what the trap relies on.
A reliable routine
- Simplify both quantities (cancel common terms).
- If no variable remains, compute and compare or C.
- If a variable remains, plug in 0, 1, a negative, and a fraction.
- Same relationship every time or C. Any disagreement D.
